Dr. Andrea Krüsi

Affiliate Assistant Professor, Division of Social Medicine

Dr. Andrea Krüsi, PhD (she/her) is an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Division of Social Medicine at the University of British Columbia and a research scientist and Research Education Lead at the Centre for Gender & Sexual Health Equity. She is also an Associate Faculty Member with the UBC School of Population and Public Health.

Dr. Krüsi is the Principle Investigator for the qualitative and arts-based component of the AESHA Project, focused on the social and structural factors shaping sex workers’ occupational health and safety. Her work focuses broadly on the criminalization of sexuality, with a particular focus on how intersecting social and structural contexts such as laws and policies shape the health and social inequities among marginalized and criminalized people. The aim of her research is to: (1) document the intersecting gendered lived-experiences of evolving legislative frameworks (e.g. Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act and the criminalization of HIV non-disclosure) on health and social inequities among marginalized and criminalized people and (2) to characterize trajectories of incarceration and community reintegration of women living with or affected by HIV to identify factors that influence access to social and structural supports and HIV prevention and care during and after incarceration.

Dr. Krüsi’s research is guided by a community advisory board, as well as longstanding collaborations with a wide variety of community organizations including Sex Workers United Against Violence, PACE Society, WISH,  Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, Health Initiative for Men (HIM), Afro-Canadian Positive Network of BC, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and Pivot Legal Society. Dr. Krüsi’s research is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Vancouver Foundation and the Canada Foundation for Innovation as well as through a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar award.
